I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter , Erika L. Sánchez
Oh! Let's imagine that a person who is always an apple to everyone's eye , having a perfect personality is not perfect at all…I am reviewing An Award winning story of Erika. L. Sánchez , I am not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter.
Julia and Olga are two young Mexican girls , and totally opposed to each other but love one another as sisters do. They live with their undocumented parents , Amà (Mother) and Apà ( Father) . Olga is twenty-two years old eldest daughter, who is obedient, ideal, respectful, and a perfect Mexican daughter. But Julia , a fifteen year old girl ,is altogether different from her sister. She is broad minded, careless, and has her own way of dealing with things.
The story is narrated by Julia as following:
Olga's death is the opening chapter of the novel , where Julia informs the readers how her sister is died, hit by a bus , and is cut into pieces. Amà became sick and remained silent , in her room , without eating anything. Because Olga is her affectionate partner in the house and now as she has died so Ama has stricken with sorrow. Julia , on seeing her , is anxious about how to revive her back to life .
Then one day when Julia returns back home, she is astonished to see her mother showered, wearing her white robe and looking fresh again. Her mother tells Julia that she is going to throw a quinceanera for her as she has turned fifteen. But Julia is not willing for that and claims it to be a waste of money and that her sister has just died. How can she be at a party?
Whenever Julia feels isolated and restless she moves into Olga's room which her mother has never liked at àll . After Olga has died, Julia has lost her concentration in everything around her. She finds some suspicious things in Olga's room. She inquires about those things and reaches the truth, that her perfect Mexican sister has never been perfect…In Fact she has been dating a forty-six year old man , married , and has made Olga pregnant.
Julia finds her dream entering into New York School and starts accomplishing her dream of becoming a writer. She strengthens relationship with her parents. And has treated her psychological illnesses and stress.
I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, a remarkable approach towards the concept of perfection… No one can always be perfect, no one has to always make others happy . Realize who you are and what you want to be in life … chase your dreams …
